Pinella Restaurant, Finland

Pinella Colonnade (1922)

Pinella is a unique landmark building dating back to 1836 and occupying a remarkable location next to the river Aura in the heart of Turku, Finland.

The building's location and historical importance meant that when we began the renovation in February 2010 the site was subject to several months of archaeological exploration, resulting in exciting finds dating back to the middle ages as well as the wallpapers and textiles from Pinella's original mid 19th century interiors.

The restaurant has a long history as an important cultural and artistic venue, and it was therefore crucial that Sunborn handled Pinella’s renovation with great care and attention to detail.

In 2011 it will be 175 years since the colonnade, the oldest part of Pinella was built. Over this time the building that became home to Pinella has been extended, enlarged and embellished, not always with the most successful results.

The renovation completed by Sunborn cleverly unites the disparate, and often discordant, elements of the original layout, creating uniquely appealing bar, restaurant and entertainment spaces, each with its own design, atmosphere and appeal.

Working under the close supervision of the Finnish Museum the building's original architectural features have been restored, with the new interior also incorporating bold, elegant 21st century details that will redefine Pinella’s appeal for a new generation.
